UND School of Law and the US News Judicial Clerkship Rankings
On September 3, 2009, U.S. News and World Report released a ranking that shows the University of North Dakota School of Law to be second in the nation in terms of placing our graduates in judicial clerkships. The U.S. News ranking indicates that 28% of our Class of 2007 were placed in judicial clerkships and 25% were placed specifically in federal Article III judicial clerkships. Our 28% placement rate for all clerkships is accurate, and according to the U.S. News ranking, is topped only by three other schools nationally. Unfortunately, the 25% number for federal Article III judicial clerkships relied on by U.S. News was inaccurate – there were actually 0% federal clerkships in that particular class. We are proud that we consistently place a large number of our students in judicial clerkships: for the Class of 2006, the percentage of students placed in judicial clerkships was 30%, with 2% in federal clerkships, and for the Class of 2008, the percentage of students placed in judicial clerkships was 22%, with 1% in federal clerkships. As soon as we learned of the inaccurate information, we contacted U.S. News and asked them to correct the data. We understand that despite our immediate response, it may take several weeks for U.S. News to make the correction. We also understand that other law schools had incorrect information reported in the ranking. As Dean, I am pleased with the continued success of our students in securing judicial clerkships after graduation from the University of North Dakota School of Law. Judicial clerkships – whether state or federal – provide a highly effective and prestigious entrée into the legal profession. Kathryn R.L. Rand |
