Law Building Project Update - November 4, 2013
Design Visioning Workshop
Members of the law school building project architectural team conducted a design visioning workshop at the School of Law on October 22 and 23. The purposes of the workshop included meeting with some of the user groups that had participated in the September design programming workshop, to conduct a town hall meeting for the law school community, to hold an "open house" meeting for the legal community, to brief the external advisory panel on the project, and to work with the Building Planning Committee to begin to prioritize the components of the building project. View the PowerPoint presentation from the workshop.
The visioning and prioritization exercises lead into the architects' developing a more detailed estimate of the feasible scope of the building project. Recognizing that the project has both financial and physical constraints, the question becomes how the law school can achieve the greatest benefit. The options for the scope of the project also incorporate engineering reviews of the existing structure to identify and cost out the elements of the building that will need to be improved for code compliance and life safety issues.
The university has decided to employ a firm to serve as the "construction manager at risk" for the law school project. When that firm has been hired, the construction manager team will work closely with the architectural team to attach firm costs to options for the project.
The Next Step - December Workshop
The next stage of the building project will be a workshop in the first week of December. The architects will spend a few days on campus actually designing the renovation and addition to the school. In addition to the opportunities for all members of the law school community to visit with the architects as they develop the design, the workshop will include a public town hall meeting that will be live streamed as well as archived for later viewing. The town hall meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 3, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Lecture Bowl of the Memorial Union. Online access to the meeting, which will include an opportunity for viewers to ask questions, is available at https://conted.breeze.und.nodak.edu/lawschool/.
