Building Project Meets Another Milestone With Placement of the Final Bricks
Construction Engineers, ICON Architectural Group and the UND School of Law celebrated another milestone in the University of North Dakota School of Law building addition and renovation project at the end of May with the placement of the final two bricks in the addition’s north wall.
The process of building the brick walls began in January on the east wall of the new addition. When that was complete, the masons moved to the west wall and finally to the north facing wall. Each wall was constructed by using a detailed process. First, the construction workers set up scaffolding and sealed it with plastic. Next an air barrier was applied and then the tedious but important job of carefully setting each brick to form the exterior walls began from the ground up. The process continued as winter turned to spring, and by the end of May the final two bricks were ready to be laid in the northeast corner of the building addition.
Much like the first sledgehammer to get the building project underway, Dean Kathryn Rand was invited by Construction Engineers to lay the final two bricks in place. Dean Rand ascended to the rooftop where the bricks and mortar were prepared and waiting. The masons gave Dean Rand a quick lesson on bricklaying to ensure proper procedure. With a crowd of onlookers of law school employees, construction workers and members of ICON watching from below, Dean Rand ceremonially applied the mortar and laid the final two bricks in place. After the ceremony, the professional mason touched up the Dean’s handiwork to officially complete the brickwork on the new addition. See photos of the final bricks being set in place.
The building addition and renovation project has moved along quickly, on time and on budget, thanks to the work of Construction Engineers and ICON Architectural Group. The anticipation is growing for the law school faculty and staff who are expected move back into the building toward the end of July to be ready for the fall semester.
A celebration and formal dedication of the building addition and renovation is being planned for UND Homecoming 2015 on October 8, 9 and 10. The schedule of events is still taking shape, so check back for more details.
