Justice Dale Sandstrom '75 and Judge M. Richard Geiger '79 honored with top SBAND Awards
Gerald M. VandeWalle Medal
Retired Justice Dale Sandstrom was presented the Gerald W. VandeWalle Medal on June 14 at the annual Bar Association meeting in Bismarck. The new State Bar Association of North Dakota (SBAND) award recognizes service in the administration of justice.
Justice Jerod Tufte nominated Justice Sandstrom for the honor based on his work developing the North Dakota Supreme Court website.
Justice Tufte wrote that Justice Sandstrom built and maintained "incredible automation systems" behind the scenes to keep the Court's web presence up to date and provide much information of value to lawyers, the press, and the general public.
Justice Tufte wrote that, while in practice, he used the website regularly to look up court rules, read court opinions, and generally to stay informed about developments in the legal community in North Dakota.
"I had great appreciation for the ease of access to court information and the great advance in public accessibility the website promoted," wrote Justice Tufte. "In my new position I have some responsibility for carrying on where Justice Sandstrom left off. Only now do I begin to fully appreciate the countless hours and thoughtful leadership provided by Justice Sandstrom over the years."
According to SBAND, the VandeWalle Medal was created by the Board of Governors in 2017 to recognize individuals for their significant dedication and contributions to the administration of justice or the improvement of the judicial system
The award, which need not be given every year, honors an individual or individuals who bring credit to the state and its judicial system or to the administration of justice in North Dakota or the United States. The recipient need not be an attorney, but should be a current or former resident of the State of North Dakota
Distinguished Service Award
Surrogate Judge M. Richard Geiger was honored with the State Bar Association of North Dakota Distinguished Service Award at the annual meeting on June 14 in Bismarck.
The Distinguished Service Award is SBAND's highest honor for North Dakota attorneys. It honors a member of the profession who has provided outstanding service to the state and legal community over an extended career. The names of award winners are listed on a plaque which hangs outside the North Dakota Supreme Court to permanently honor the recipients and to remind lawyers ad the public of their dedication and work.
Judge Geiger served as a District Judge in the Northeast Judicial District from 1994-2017 and was county judge for Walsh, Pembina, and Cavalier Counties from 1987-1994.
