About the event:
This pre-conference training (held in conjunction with Indian Nations www.tlpi.org) is intended for Tribal and Federal prosecutors. This training will provide general information pertinent to the prosecution of domestic violence and sexual assault as well as important trial skills and tools to improve the prosecution of domestic violence and sexual assault cases in tribal communities. Specific discussion will focus on understanding domestic violence and sexual assault in tribal communities, working with victims through the trial process, victims' rights considerations for prosecutors, making charging decisions, specific rules of evidence and sentencing considerations.

THIS EVENT IS FOR NORTH DAKOTA TRIBES ONLY. This will be the first of two roundtable discussions on sexual assault response and resources for Native Victims of sexual violence. The Roundtable will provide a forum for victim advocates, tribal prosecutors, healthcare workers, law enforcement officials and tribal justice system officials from the tribes in North Dakota to come together and discuss tribal justice challenges and opportunities with respect to justice system response to incidents of sexual violence against Native Women.

The Tribal Law and Order permits Indian tribes to amend their Codes to expand their sentencing authority to three years if certain conditions are met. This one-day conference will talk about how Tribes can amend their codes to exercise the authority granted them under the TLOA, the various considerations in deciding whether to exercise that power, and the requirements for legal counsel and Judges under the TLOA.
