The Law Women’s Caucus strives to create and raise awareness regarding various social issues that affect women and our society as a whole. In addition to holding monthly general meetings, the Law Women’s Caucus facilitates special events each academic year, such as an alternating special Fall Event, Helen Hamilton Day each spring, and Community Outreach Projects each semester.
So what do our events usually look like?
Monthly General Meetings:
Each month, LWC holds a general meeting. Each general meeting has a unique theme/topic based upon current events and issues that are of importance for our members. Some examples include: Human Trafficking in Western North Dakota or the Glass Ceiling for Women in the Workplace.
Our meetings usually begin with an update on upcoming events and important dates, followed by an introduction of our guest speaker. Our guest speaker will then provide insight on our monthly theme/topic. Following our speaker, we hope to facilitate a discussion on the topic and to allow for our members to reflect and share their points of view.
Our general meetings are a great way to meet fellow students, listen to great speakers,
and learn more about LWC!
Our Fall Event is one of two special events that are hosted annually by LWC. Specifically, our Fall Event strives to promote issues concerning women or minorities. Although each Fall Event looks different, in the past, it has included a roundtable discussion, a group of panelists, or a documentary followed by an open forum.
Helen Hamilton Day:
Helen Hamilton Day is the second of our two special events that are hosted annually by LWC. It was created in order to honor Helen Hamilton as the first female graduate of the UND School of Law, and is hosted every Spring. This special event typically consists of a day-long educational seminar featuring several panel-led discussions on contemporary topics and offers continuing legal education credits to UND alumni and other local professionals.
Community Involvement Outreach Projects:
Each semester, LWC also hosts a Community Involvement Outreach Project. Our outreach projects are hosted to help us give back to the community that has done so much for us! Our outreach projects typically include food drives for our local shelter, or personal hygiene items for our local domestic violence center.
The 2017-2018 Academic Year:
The Law Women’s Caucus Board is currently planning another meaningful and enlightening event lineup for the 2017-2018 academic year! As always, we are looking forward to having you join alongside us!
With that in mind, we wanted to take a moment to share with you our vision and goals for 2017-2018. This year our theme will be: Addressing Challenges in the Exploitation of Women and Girls. Ultimately, our goal this year will be to continue to raise awareness of the issues that affect women and our society as a whole, and how to address these challenges.
Our 2017 Fall Event:
This year, LWC’s fall event will be an opportunity for courtroom observation at the Grand Forks County Courthouse! There is an option to attend a criminal or civil jury trial.
Our Outreach Projects:
This year we have also arranged to host two separate outreach projects. We will do a donation drive in the Fall semester, and assemble care packages for victims of domestic violence in the Spring.
Helen Hamilton Day 2019:
This year, Helen Hamilton Day will be held on Friday, March 29, 2019. Please stay tuned for more details.
